MJ Comprehensive Science 1 is the first in a series of three consecutive science classes. In this course, middle school students explore the disciplines of life science, physical science, and earth-space science. In addition, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts are integrated throughout the course. The lessons make real-world connections and require students to apply STEM skills like analysis, problem-solving, science knowledge, and engineering practices. Hands-on and virtual laboratory investigations are included throughout the course to provide students with opportunities for exploration through scientific inquiry, research, measurement, problem-solving, and experimental procedures. By the end of the course, students will be practicing, experimenting, thinking, and talking like a scientist!

Module One: Force and Energy

-Mass versus weight

-Law of universal gravitation

-Types of forces

-Impacts of forces on motion

-Distance vs. time graphs

-Law of conservation of energy

-Potential and kinetic energy

 

Module Two: The Earth

-Landforms on Earth’s surface

-Impacts of weathering and erosion

-Interactions among Earth’s spheres

-Thermal energy and heat transfer

 

Module Three: The Atmosphere

-Global weather patterns

-Differences between weather and climate

-Factors that affect air pressure

-Impacts of the water cycle on weather patterns

-Composition and structure of Earth’s atmosphere

-The atmosphere’s role in protecting life on Earth
