Step into the Health Science Foundations course and learn what it takes to be a healthcare professional. This course is designed to provide the student with in-depth knowledge of the health care system and introduce them to various occupations in the field. Students will explore the educational requirements, licenses, and certifications for careers at multiple levels within the health care system. The learning focuses on communication and interpersonal skills, use of technology, ethics, and the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will also learn first aid skills and how to assess vital signs. Health Science Foundations is part of the Secondary Health Core.

Module One: Healthcare Foundations

-Types of healthcare providers

-Range of healthcare services available

-Factors that influence healthcare delivery

-Differences between healthcare clusters

-Employment and career growth in healthcare

-Desirable traits of the healthcare team

-Appropriate professional behavior

-Résumé and cover letters for a job in the healthcare profession


Module Two: Professional Communication

-Basic observational skills

-Medical documentation strategies

-Recording subjective and objective medical information

-Courteous and respectful behavior in the healthcare field

-Composition and functions of a healthcare team

-Methods for building positive team relationships

-Effective techniques for managing team conflict


Module 3: Law and Ethics

-Actions that lead to malpractice

-Legal and ethical healthcare issues

-Code of ethics in healthcare

-Illegal and/or unethical practices
