Exploration starts here! Students will learn about early civilizations, European explorers, and early American history, using videos, maps, and primary and secondary sources to understand these events. Source Study activities will help extend student thinking around primary and secondary sources. Students will learn more about being a responsible citizen and solve real-world problems such as choosing where to set up a pet-friendly hurricane shelter.

Module One: Early Civilizations

-Ancient American civilizations

-Native American tribes in North America

-Compare cultural aspects of Native American tribes in North America


Module Two: Age of Exploration

-European exploration

-European explorers

-Native Americans and explorers interactions

-Effects of European exploration

-Effects of interactions among Native Americans and settlers

-Role of trade in the economic growth of North America


Module Three: Colonial Times

-Original 13 colonies

-Religious, economic, and cultural reasons for colonial settlement

-Geographical regions of Colonial America

-New England Colonies

-Middle Colonies

-Southern Colonies

-Triangular trade

-Political participation during the colonial period

-Technological advancements in the early development of the United States


Module Four: American Revolution

-Events leading up to the American Revolution

-Contributions to the American Revolution

-Political ideas of Patriots, Loyalists, and other colonist about the American Revolution

-First and second Continental Congresses and the Committees of Correspondence

-Declaration of Independence

-Foreign allies in the American Revolution

-The role of women in the American Revolution

-Political and personal hardships from the American Revolution
