Dig into and analyze significant works of art and architecture from prehistory through the 21st century to discover art history and criticism methodologies. In this course, you will explore art historical terminology, media, and techniques used by varied artists and cultures and examine how art is a vehicle to communicate cultural, political, and religious shifts and changes. You will develop your analysis skills by analyzing historical documents within the context of cultural heritage, critiquing and comparing works from around the world, and developing proficiency in writing and problem-solving.

Module One: Really, Really Early Art

-Appropriate behavior in a museum

-How art and history are connected and the impacts on modern culture

-Identify art that has a function, symbolic art, and how art communicates ideas

-The influence of art on other art and those who view it

-Elements of art and principles of design

-Art analysis with visual and contextual elements

-Explore early art common characteristics of early art and how and why cultures created it

-How art history is connected to other disciplines

-Art from ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures


Module Two: Still Pretty Early Art

-Art from early Oceanic, South, and Southeast Asian cultures

-Art from early East Asian cultures

-Analyze the visual and contextual elements of a work of art

-Art from early Meso and South American cultures

-Art from Cycladic, Minoan, Mycenaen, and early Greek cultures

-Art from the Greek periods of Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic


Module Three: Earlyish Art

-Art from Etruscan and Roman cultures

-Art from South, East, and Southeast Asian cultures between 250 BCE and 1100 CE

-Compare and contrast two artworks and how they communicate meaning

-Art from East Asia between 660 and 1581 CE

-Art from the West and Central Asian cultures between 245 and 1360 CE

-Art from African cultures between 300 to 1500 CE


Module Four: Not So Earlyish Art

-Art from Medieval and Meditteranean cultures between 500 and 1390 CE

-Art from the Americas between 600 to 1300 CE

-Art from Europe in the Romanesque and Gothic periods between 1000 to 1400 CE

-Art from Italy between 1200 to 1520 CE
